It is with a mix of pride and sadness that I write to you to announce that I will be stepping down from my role as Executive Director of Uptown People's Law Center. This comes after 45 incredible years with this organization. My tenure began when I was a law school intern, and now it ends after a decade of serving as ED, a role I took on in the wake of Belinda Belcher’s untimely death.  

Reflections on Our Achievements

I am incredibly proud of the growth and achievements we have accomplished together, especially over the last decade while I have been Executive Director. UPLC has become a nationally recognized organization in the realm of prisoners' rights, particularly the movement to end solitary confinement. Since 1981, we have been fighting tirelessly to end the torture of solitary, and I am honored to have been a part of this work.

I want to acknowledge that much of our success is due to the faith and trust that people inside prison have placed in us. A number of formerly imprisoned individuals have come to work for UPLC over the years, and they helped shape us into the organization we are today. In particular, I want to recognize Brian Nelson, who spent 28 years in solitary confinement and devoted a decade to helping those still inside after his release, until his passing in 2021.

As one of Chicago’s leading tenants’ rights organizations, UPLC has been on the forefront of fighting gentrification in Uptown, and beyond. UPLC played an important role in the larger grassroots community organizing effort to help keep Uptown diverse, and livable for thousands of people.

I must also express my deepest gratitude to all of our generous donors who have kept us going. Sadly, not enough people care about prisoners, and I am truly grateful that you do. On behalf of those we serve, thank you for your unwavering support.

Looking to the Future

While I am retiring from the Executive Director position, I am not stepping away from the struggle. I look forward to continuing to support UPLC and fight against our inhumane prison system in new ways.

On a personal note, I am excited to do more traveling with my wife Karen, who recently retired from her position as a Chicago public school teacher. We especially enjoy hiking in scenic places.
